With Munken Polar, you will find a fresh, minimally tinted yet crisp white. Munken has a firm feel and natural appearance. Wordwide, it has an excellent reputation as one of the highest quality uncoated papers on the market. The 1.13-fold volume guarantees high opacity and stiffness, even if you use comparatively low grammages. Munken is also notable for its excellent running and printing properties and sustainable paper production.
By the way: The design paper is produced by the Polish-Swedish manufacturer Arctic Paper on the Swedish west coast, around 100 kilometres north of Gothenburg in the town of Munkedal. The ‘Monk Valley’ (Munkedal) is a coastal area that was first settled by monks – the name of the paper grade is a reminder of the region’s cultural heritage. The Munken mill was founded in 1871; today, the southern Swedish site is one of the most environmentally friendly paper mills in the world and fulfils the highest standards of environmentally friendly paper production. Arctic Paper invests heavily to ensure the use of certified pulp, continuous energy savings and improvements in water and air emissions.
Sustainability
Arctic Paper Munkedals produces Munken Design paper according to the cradle-to-cradle principle, in a closed raw material cycle modelled on nature. All of a product’s raw materials remain 100% in the cycle after the period of use and are reused. The standard for safe and particularly sustainable products is recognised worldwide. Arctic Paper Munkedals is the first paper mill in the world to successfully complete the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze certification for an entire paper range. Munken Design paper also bears the EU Ecolabel. The certificate has been awarded by the European Union in Brussels since 1992 and confirms that the paper production fulfils high standards of environmental compatibility. The fresh fibres used come from sustainably managed forests and are FSC® and PEFC® certified. Munken is also categorised as food-safe and resistant to ageing in accordance with ISO 9706, which applies equally to Pure, Lynx and Polar.
Applications for Munken Design Paper

Munken combined with other papers
Munken envelopes are available in DIN C6/5 (with as well as without window) and DIN C5 (without window) format. Thus, the business paper leaves nothing to be desired in business use. However, you can also combine it with other types of paper in a variety of ways.
To communicate in a truly sustainable way, use the uncoated Munken papers together with Crush. The Crush papers, cards and envelopes are characterised by a slightly grainy, rough surface, delicate colours and a revolutionary sustainable product concept: 15 % of the raw material is replaced by organic waste. In addition, 40 % recycled paper is used, while the remaining 45 % primary fibres come from sustainably managed forests with FSC® certification.
When you combine the smooth surface of Munken with structured papers, you create an attractive, haptic contrast. Fine linen surfaces match the Scandinavian design paper very nicely. The natural white Opaline linen blends harmoniously with Munken Pure in terms of colour.

Printing on Munken paper
Munken Design papers have been specially developed for offset printing. Printing inks are absorbed evenly by the uncoated papers, giving the printed motifs a beautiful and soft appearance. The papers are also suitable for many other printing techniques, such as flexographic printing, xerography, digital printing, laser printing and inkjet (black and white). They can also be processed using standard office printing systems and at home without compromising on print quality.
We are particularly impressed with the fine paper when it comes to photo printing. Depending on the desired image impression, you can choose the suitable colour tone from Kristall, Polar, Lynx and Pure. The radiant Kristall white and the crisp Polar white emphasise images, while the natural white Lynx reproduces them authentically and unadulterated. The cream-coloured Pure gives photos a special, atmospheric look.
Munken Kristall, Polar, Lynx and Pure not only excel in the reproduction of photos, illustrations and drawings. With their eye-friendly reading properties, they are also ideal for text-heavy printed matters such as brochures, magazines, journals and catalogues.
